When you're learning anything new, there will be times you will want to give up trying, or compare yourself to others. With meditation, you can progress as slow as you need to. Let's go through some reminders for new students practicing meditation. Hopefully these will ease your mind of any pressure you may put on yourself about perceptions of a successful meditation session.
"Meditation can help us embrace our worries, our fear, our anger; and that is very healing. We let our own natural capacity of healing do the work." -Thich Nhat Hanh
Let it happen naturally without an expectation of result. Be guided by your own experience.
Don't be impatient, allow meditation the time it needs to reach you.
Be willing to feel the release meditation brings. Don't grasp for control.
Be forgiving of yourself. There is no right or wrong way. Let go of the fear of failure.
Be willing to see what meditation shows you. Embrace the thoughts, questions & feelings that will come.
Don't try to fix or repair what you feel or see. Let these emotions sit with you as you discover acceptance.
Don't compare yourself to any other meditator. Solo meditation is a very personal practice. Differences do not matter in meditation.
Remember that you have the capability already within you to be mindful. Expanding on a mindful life to a practice of meditation, will help you focus without self grasping. It is tranquil acceptance of what is and what will be.
