Perhaps, for many reasons, you feel like meditation isn't for you. You see photos of people meditating and you just can't imagine yourself sitting like that or what you would think about the entire time . Maybe you're afraid meditation is too difficult or you want to discover more about it before you try.
Over the next few posts, I will provide some insight and guidance into the practice of meditation and mindfulness. This practice looks different for everyone, and it's important to tailor your experience on what makes you comfortable.
"Meditation is not to escape from society but to come back to ourselves and see what is going on."-Thich Nhat Hanh
Being mindful and meditating is for everyone. Meditation is not a religious practice. It is an investment in your mental health and well-being. At first, being quiet and learning to listen within, can be a challenge. You have to remember, you're going day by day surrounded by activity, stimulation and noise. It will take a few sessions to get used to this new way of listening. Don't give up if it isn't helping right away. Our minds are filled with so much clutter and trash, it will seem impossible to clear it all. Given time, you will find yourself looking forward to the chance to 'just be', without the pressure of perfection.
Meditation will not put you in a trance state, it won't solve all your problems and it isn't 'taking a nap'. It trains your mind to see and accept. It prepares you for the unexpected. Think of meditation as a tool, like a broom, that de-clutters the mind. We are always pushing for things to happen in our lives, wanting the next best thing, and feeling stress. Meditation is relaxing your thoughts, without making anything happen and without wanting. It is learning to visualize that stress floating away.
But before you practice meditation, it's best to have instruction, that way you won't become frustrated. Take your time, be informed and open up to the possibility that this may be just what you need at a time when it seems you are surrounded by chaos.
